Shale and trails

The early settlers of the Salt Lake Valley did not subscribe to the idea that shale isn't a suitable material for trail construction. As you can see in this picture, part of the so called "mine trail" in Brigham Fork cuts through several shale beds. This former rail alignment was constructed in the late 1800s, and has had little to no maintenance since then. The trail is still in very good shape in the shaley sections.

Shale also provides a challenging surface for mountain biking. When the shale is lose, riders need to keep their speed up, while at the same time avoiding the larger rocks to avoid a puncture.

How is the shale during the rain? Trails through the mancos shale become impassable with the addition of rain.
